Garages and parking
Your questions answered
Where can I park my car?
You must only park in marked areas or on the side of the road. In most areas there are parking control schemes. All tenants, residents and visitors must follow the rules of these schemes. See Parking and Parking control schemes.
How can I rent a garage or parking space?
We have quite a number of garages to rent and in some areas we have designated parking areas with gates. If you would like to rent a garage or parking space you need to contact your Neighbourhood Office. See Renting a garage or parking space.
Can I store anything in my garage or parking space?
A garage is only for storing a car, van or motorbike. You must not store any dangerous items, eg petrol, bottled gas or other flammable materials in it. Your garage must not be used for general storage and it must not be used in connection with a business.
What do I do if my car is clamped or taken away?
This will only happen if you have not followed the rules of the local parking control scheme or have left a vehicle untaxed or abandoned. If your car is clamped you can get it released quite quickly by making the payment - details are given on a ticket that is left on your car. If your car is taken away, there will be a notice nearby telling you what to do to get it back.
Renting a garage or parking space
We have a number of garages across the Hackney area. If you would like to rent one just contact your Neighbourhood Office.
Although first priority is given to tenants on the estate, people who are not tenants can also rent garages or parking spaces.
You have a separate rent account for a garage or parking space, but you can pay in the same ways as you pay your rent. See Rent payment.
If you are in arrears with your rent, you cannot rent a garage or parking space, have a parking permit or have keys for estate barrier gates.
Parking control schemes
Hackney operates several schemes. You must not park in any ‘no parking’ areas and must follow the rules of any scheme in your area. This also applies to members of your family or any visitors.
You need to display permits at all times, and you may need to give us registration numbers of cars that you or your family park on the estate.
Parking
- You must only park in designated parking areas. No area can be reserved by a particular household unless it is a parking bay that you are renting.
- In the interest of health and safety and essential services, do not park anywhere where it could cause danger or an obstruction.
- Your car may be removed if it is untaxed, or parked illegally on a pavement, footpath, verge, hatched area or other part of an estate, or if it is causing a danger or an obstruction.
- You must ask our permission if you want to park any vehicle, caravan, or trailer on a regular basis on any road or land owned by the Council unless it has been designated for parking.
- You must not use car parking areas, your driveway or any area near your home to carry out major repairs to any vehicle.
- If you park incorrectly within a Parking Control Scheme your car will be clamped or taken away, and you will have to pay a heavy fine. See What do I do?.
